The City Council will discuss proposed revisions to the Animals Ordinance at a study session on Monday, March 21, 2011. The Animals Ordinance is the local law related to keeping animals including chickens, other fowl, bees, goats, pigs and other animals in El Cerrito. The Council will hear comments from the public and will give staff direction as to how to proceed with changes to the Ordinance.

El Cerrito's Carbon Footprint

Recently, there was a community meeting at City Hall to discuss proposed revisions to the city's animal ordinance. This includes changes to the rules for keeping chickens, bees, and other animals - essentially allowing small-scale / hobby uses. More information can be found on the city's website here.

Using Coffee Grounds to Grow Mushrooms

I read about an ingeniously-green, local business called BTTR Ventures in a recent New York Times blog post. It started last year and already has six full-time employees, sells mushrooms to the Berkeley Student Co-op, sells mushroom-growing kits in Whole Foods' stores for $15.99, and diverts tons of coffee grounds from landfills.

The company sums themselves up on their website...

"BTTR Ventures (pronounced Better) is a 100% sustainable urban mushroom farm founded in Berkeley, CA by two 2009 grads from UCBerkeley. BTTR grows its gourmet mushrooms on recycled coffee grounds from Peet's Coffee & Tea and is currently diverting over 6000 lbs a week from the landfill."

Slow Electric Car Sales, Bay Area Dealerships Close

I recently noticed that a green car dealership I always pass on San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley is no longer open (it's a different car dealership). According to the Oakland Tribune, sales of electric cars are very slow right now...

"The Bay Area's independent electric car dealerships are in perilous shape, even as electric cars are being hailed as the next big thing by major auto manufacturers. Factors including a hurting economy, lower gas prices and, most notably, the cars' own limitations conspired to undo them."

Van Jones' New Jobs

Building Raised Vegetable Garden Beds

We're in the process of building a vegetable garden in an area that was covered in thick ivy for decades. Our plan is to include two raised beds that we'll make ourselves.

I read a brief piece in the West County Times on Saturday about the potential problems with using treated wood for their construction. Some studies have shown that chemicals used in the treating process can leach from the wood into the soil. Alternatives include untreated cedar or redwood (which rot less quickly), stone, concrete block or brick.

Curbside Compost Pickup Coming to El Cerrito

This summer, El Cerrito is planning to roll out a curbside composting program. Apparently, food scraps make up about 35% of total trash. This percentage seems high to me, maybe it includes commercial trash pickup, not just residential. Regardless, it's a great move.

New Library and Senior Center

The seed money for a new library and senior center in El Cerrito will likely be surrendered to the State of California later this year, according to the West County Times. The only way for the city to get the funds back would reportedly be by lawsuit.

Contra Costa County Smog

The San Francisco Chronicle recently wrote about the new smog limits proposed by the EPA. Contra Costa County suffers from some of the poorest air quality in the Bay Area. The county has a ground-level ozone concentration of 78 parts per billion, which is higher than the 75ppb standard set in 2008, and markedly higher than the newly proposed standard of 60-70ppb. The Chronicle has an interesting map showing East Bay smog levels by county.

New cafe in El Cerrito & Eclectix Closes

I'm sad to hear about Eclectix closing on San Pablo Ave. What I enjoyed the most were the special art gallery events they held in the evening - there really isn't anything else like that in El Cerrito.

On a good note, next door, apparently there is a new cafe in the works for the former 33 Revolutions space. On their posted alcohol permit the business is noted as Bloomers Cafe & Gift.

New El Cerrito Del Norte Safeway & 33 Revolutions Closure

There are a couple changes taking place on San Pablo Avenue these days. I saw a leasing sign for retail space at the old Target site next to the Del Norte BART station. Adjoining the new Safeway at the site will be some retail space lining San Pablo Avenue, with a new, small parking area. It's supposed to be available as of January 2011.

One of my big concerns about this project is making sure that the new Safeway/retail is pedestrian friendly and easily accessed by the BART station. Here is the new site plan and leasing information.

We're in desperate need of a good cafe up here on the north side of El Cerrito, so that would be a great addition. What sort of retail would you like to see there?

Speaking of cafes, unfortunately, 33 Revolutions didn't make it. There is an interesting story behind the store/cafe's closing - it wasn't all about the down economy. Apparently some personal issues came into play and the West County Times has the lowdown. I really appreciate them giving it a shot, though, and hope someone else can bring a viable business to that space.

A controversial new T-Mobile cell phone tower is proposed for Camp Herns in El Cerrito. The tower would be eight stories tall - higher than the surrounding trees. The latest details are here in the West County Times.

El Cerrito's Climate Change Plan

Today's West County Times has a good article on the City of El Cerrito's call to action on combating climate change. Part of the planing process includes soliciting input from residents and businesses. As council member Ann Cheng says:

"Developing a climate action plan fits the general consciousness of the whole Bay Area; it's something people can glom onto ... a good fit for El Cerritans. The key to making it successful is getting their recommendations on how to use our lands and plan around transit, beyond automobiles."

New Plans for a Safeway and Mixed-Use Development at the del Norte BART

The West County Times has an article about a new deal for the former Target site near the El Cerrito del Norte BART station. Apparently, thankfully, no Wal-Mart is in the works. The other interesting aspect of the deal is:

"The deal sustains hopes to eventually develop the property with mixed use — residential, retail and office space — to take advantage of proximity to transit hub El Cerrito del Norte Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, with a goal of reducing car use."

The New Menu at Rialto Cinemas Cerrito

I guess that's the new name for the theater - Rialto Cinemas Cerrito? It's not too catchy but, anyway, we went last weekend because we heard they now have their kitchen up and running. I was a little unsure how the food would turn out since they just started but I have to say we were very pleasantly surprised. We had a nice salad and their veggie artichoke pizza - both were excellent (I'd love to see some more veggie pizza options).

As of last weekend, they didn't have their liquor license yet. I think it's a great start for the new operator, though, and we'll definitely be back regularly.

Samoa Tsunami - Before/After & How to Help

This time last year, my wife and I spent an idyllic two weeks honeymooning in Samoa. What I remember was the incredible snorkeling, beautiful scenic vistas, fascinating village life and warm Samoan culture.

This week Samoa (along with Tonga and American Samoa) was hit by a devastating tsunami. As of right now, Samoa appears to have sustained the largest death toll at 149 people. Lalomanu Beach, on the southeast corner of Upolu (one of the two main islands making up Samoa) was one of the hardest hit areas. The beach and village were devastated.

Below you'll find some photos from our visit, along with links to photos and videos showing what the same area looks like now, post-tsunami. At the bottom, I've listed some current relief efforts. My wife and I are deeply saddened by this disaster and its impact on the kind people of Samoa.

El Cerrito Oak Trees Poisoned

I just ran across a surprising story from earlier this month about oak trees poisoned in an El Cerrito public park. It looks like holes were drilled into the base of the trees, poison was inserted and corks were plugged into the holes. One theory is that someone did it to preserve/reclaim views from their home.

Water usage update - low flow faucet aerators

Back in mid-March we installed low flow aerators on our faucets (I did a post about that). I've been curious if there has been any difference in our water usage since we made this change so I dug out our water bills.

So, for the last four months, we've averaged a total of 66 gallons of water per day for our home. This compares to 88 gallons per day during the same period last year - a decrease of 25%. I think that our decrease is partially attributable to the low flow aerators, as well as the fact that we're conserving water from shower usage (using the cold water when the shower first turns on to water our plants). But, really, we need more months of data to support this.

Our current daily per capita usage is 33 gallons compared to the EBMUD single-family home per capita average of 102 gallons per day (as of 2002).

Nationwide, average indoor water use per capita is about 69 gallons per day according to the AWWA. The EPA estimates that 30% of household water is actually used outdoors - for a per capita average household usage of roughly 100 gallons per day nationwide.

Earlier this year I mentioned Turnabout Thrift Shop on San Pablo Avenue. It's a small, nice thrift store near the Cerrito theater and sale proceeds go to charity. Unfortunately, I read today that they are in need of volunteers and have had to cut down on their operating hours. The West County Times has more in today's paper.

I ran across the Bay Area Free Book Exchange on San Pablo Ave. recently. It's a book co-op that offers free books to the public (limit 50 per person). It's not huge and fancy but big enough to have a nice browse.

They are located at 10520 San Pablo Ave. in El Cerrito and are only open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am-6pm.

Their opening receptions are fun - casual, well attended and typically include some snacks, wine and live music. One of my favorite pieces was Eric Joyner's robot flinging a doughnut at the Transamerica Pyramid, and there was an amazing screenprint...

Adventures in Composting: The Start

My wife and I have finally dived into composting, having talked about it over the last year. We scouted out a location for the bin on the north side of our house and looked around town for a compost bin that didn't cost 3 figures. We also wanted one that was of simple construction, yet seemed durable. Welcome...Super Composter! It's made by a company called Gardenviews, has a 450-liter capacity and sells for $79.99 at El Cerrito's Pastime ACE Hardware on San Pablo Ave.

We cleared some ivy at the base of a small slope we have on the side of the house and then I dug a notch in the hillside to create a 3-foot by 3-foot flat base for the bin.

It's simple for most people to put together - no tools necessary. My wife had to come to my rescue, though, when I got stuck assembling the bin's sides...all told it took about 20 minutes.

So now we're done and are reading up on what to do next. The Ecology Center on San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley has some great (including free) composting resources - that place is awesome...

Cerrito Theater: Reopening planned on July 15 + Possible Lawsuit

Santa Rosa-based Rialto Cinemas is officially the new operator of the Cerrito Theater. They hope to open on July 15 and I see they already have details up on their company website. More details are available from the East Bay Express. The West County Times had an article this morning but it's not yet available online.

Sadly, there is a brewing legal dispute between the former operator and the city regarding property left in the theater. The West County Times has the lowdown. I really hope it ends amicably.

East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse

I'll be taking a brief hiatus from blogging as I'm off to Vietnam and Cambodia...

I checked out the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse for the first time a month or two ago (bought a school desk), and I've been back since. It's a nonprofit in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland (4695 Telegraph Avenue) that sells a random assortment of odds and ends - some used, others new and unwanted.

Let's see, you'll find paper, cards, fabric, magazines, books, movies, buttons, furniture, maps, art, toilet paper rolls, cans, jars, office supplies, corks - just to scratch the surface. You never know exactly what you're going to find when you go - perhaps they just got a shipment of doll heads. It's particularly worth checking out if you're into any sort of arts and crafts, have kids or if you're a teacher.

San Francisco International Film Festival

The San Francisco International Film Festival, one of my favorite events in the Bay Area, is currently in full swing (through May 7). Since I moved to the East Bay, I'm so thankful that they hold some screenings at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, although I still try to make it over to the Kabuki in San Francisco to see a few films.

The East Bay Express had a nice profile of Linda Blackaby, the head programmer of the festival; it's a behind-the-scenes peek at what I think is a pretty cool job.

The Fate of the Cerrito Speakeasy - May 4

There's an opportunity for those who want to voice their opinion about the fate of the Cerrito Speakeasy on May 4. The Agenda for Monday's El Cerrito City Council / Redevelopment Agency Meeting includes the following:

"Adopt a resolution which: 1) Authorizes Redevelopment Agency staff to transition the operation of the Cerrito Theater from Downey Street Productions to a new operator, including the acquisition of Downey Street Production's equipment and fixtures at the Cerrito Theater to aid in that transition; 2) Appropriates up to $100,000 in Redevelopment funds for equipment acquisition; and 3) Authorizes staff to take the necessary steps to terminate the Cerrito Theater Lease Agreement with Downey Street Productions in conjunction with finding a new operator for the Cerrito Theater."

New Safeway Planned near El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station

The West County Times reported today that there are plans in the works for a new Safeway store and other retail development for the former Target site on the south side of the BART station. The proposed store would start construction in 2010.

For a preliminary site plan and design drawings check out this Safeway website. It reports that this new store would be a replacement for their existing, smaller El Cerrito location.

The Cerrito Speakeasy to Stay Open, for Now?

The Oakland Tribune reports that the theater's operator has changed their mind about closing and is trying to keep the operation running:

"Less than a month after the Parkway Speakeasy Theater closed, the operators announced in an e-mail to city officials last week that they were pulling out of their second location, the Cerrito Speakeasy Theater on San Pablo Avenue. Then they quickly changed their minds.

'We have no intention of leaving,' said Catherine Fischer, who has been operating the cinema with her husband, Kyle, as Downey Street Productions since the Cerrito opened in 2006. 'We'll continue operating and doing the best we can.'"

The Cerrito Speakeasy is Closing - R.I.P.

In sad news, it appears as though the Cerrito Speakeasy is indeed closing. As I recently posted, the movie theater operator is behind in its lease payments and was seeking a renegotiation of their lease and loan agreement terms. The city has been working on this but the operator recently advised them that they are leaving the theater.

Per the city of El Cerrito Redevelopment Agency:

"Based on notification received on April 7, 2009 from Downey Street Productions of their intent to close the Cerrito Speakeasy Theater, the Agency Board will not be going forward with consideration of proposed amendments to the lease and DDLA with Downey Street Productions on May 4, 2009 as was previously reported. The Board has given direction to Staff and Agency Counsel to work with Downey Street Productions on an orderly transition of the Cerrito Theater to a new operator, as was suggested by the CEO of Downey Street Productions. In addition, the Agency Board gave direction to Staff to begin the process for selecting a new operator...The Agency remains committed to the Cerrito Theater as a community asset. "

El Cerrito Joins the East Bay Green Corridor Partnership

The San Francisco Chronicle reported today that El Cerrito, along with Albany, is joining the East Bay Green Corridor Partnership, which is an effort to make the area a hub for green business.

"The 12 partners will contribute $10,000 each and hire a staff member who'll be based at the East Bay Economic Development Alliance office in Oakland...they've also snagged a federal budget earmark worth $147,000 for job training and are optimistic that other funding requests will soon be granted."

The Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire

We went to the Alameda Point Antiques Faire this past weekend - what a place, you can find anything you could ever imagine. Don't let the term "Antique Faire" scare you off either, as there's everything from records, vintage clothes, books, cameras, street signs, furniture, parts of old buildings, the list goes on. It runs the first Sunday of every month.

The Parkway Closes, is the Cerrito Speakeasy Next?

The Cerrito Speakeasy is a great community asset, providing a good night out in the neighborhood with its movie, pizza and beer business model. It also anchors one of El Cerrito's most vibrant and interesting blocks, which is home to 33 Revolutions cafe and live music venue, Eclectix gallery, El Cerrito Yoga, Raphael's Shutter Cafe and Turnabout Thrift Shop.

The Cerrito's sister theater, the Parkway Speakeasy in Oakland, closed a couple weeks ago, a victim of the recession, the basic economics of running a theater and a lease dispute with the building's owner. I really enjoyed going there, it had a lot of character and was a key part of the neighborhood. This made me think - if the Parkway didn't make it, how's the Cerrito doing?

Sadly, not great. The East Bay Express is reporting that they owe the city of El Cerrito $150,000 in back rent. I couldn't believe this...whenever I go there the showings seem really well attended and a lot people buy drinks and food - so what's going on?

Well, the city is really concerned about the Cerrito's financial viability and in late January sent a letter to the theater's owner (who, incidently, seem like really nice, passionate people) notifying them that they are in technical default of their lease but that the city is committed to working with them to ensure the theater can continue operations. The theater's owner has asked the city to restructure their lease, which the city seems amenable to do as long as the owner can produce a business plan that demonstrates how they're going to operate the theater in an economically sound manner.

Maybe the closing of the Parkway will help focus resources in getting the Cerrito back on stable ground. A lot of time, money and effort went into bringing back life to the Cerrito Theater and I hope it's around for years to come.

New Green Rock Climbing Gym in El Cerrito

A quick shout out to Bridges Rock Gym, which just opened up in El Cerrito at 5635 San Diego Street (near Central and San Pablo Avenues). I was impressed when reading their online journal that they used some green building practices during its construction, such as using green concrete, FSC-certified lumber, and laying true linoleum flooring. The finishes inside are a step above what climbers may be used to in the Bay Area.

But how's the climbing? We looked it over last weekend and it's really nice with some of the best bouldering around (albeit darn high, topping out at 18'). They also have slacklines, yoga, a cafe (not sure if it's open yet) and a few pieces of cardio equipment. They have a few short top ropes set up but that's not their focus.

It's a tough economy to be starting a small business and I wish them the best of luck.

Their Grand Opening is this weekend, March 28-29, and all activities and events are free.

Carbon Footprints, Oakland's Van Jones and Green for All

I just read a couple of terrific articles from The New Yorker. One titled Big Foot, talks about the blurring of morality and science as it relates to the rush to lower carbon footprints. Sometimes green choices are not as easy as they first appear:

"Last year, a study of the carbon cost of the global wine trade found that it is actually more 'green' for New Yorkers to drink wine from Bordeaux, which is shipped by sea, than wine from California, sent by truck. That is largely because shipping wine is mostly shipping glass. The study found that 'the efficiencies of shipping drive a ‘green line’ all the way to Columbus, Ohio, the point where a wine from Bordeaux and Napa has the same carbon intensity.'”

The other is a profile of Oakland's Van Jones who founded the non-profit, Green For All, and was just appointed by the president to be the White House's "green jobs" adviser. The article, Greening the Ghetto, goes on to say:

"The logo of Green for All, which is based in Oakland, California, is a sun rising over a crowded cityscape. The group’s goal is to broaden the appeal of the environmental movement and, at the same time, bring jobs to poor neighborhoods. Jones often says that he is trying to 'green the ghetto.'"

"In it [his book], he argues that the best way to fight both global warming and urban poverty is by creating millions of 'green jobs'—weatherizing buildings, installing solar panels, and constructing mass-transit systems. A percentage of these jobs—Jones is purposefully vague about how many—should go to the disadvantaged and the chronically unemployed. 'The green economy should not be just about reclaiming thrown-away stuff,' he writes. 'It should be about reclaiming thrown-away communities.'"

I love this quote he gave when asked how he deals with people with differing views:

“I’m not looking for the points of difference. I’m looking for the points of commonality. I’ve trained my mind so that people can say twenty-seven things that might be objectionable, but as soon as they say one, that twenty-eighth thing, that’s in the right direction, that’s where I’m going to go in the conversation. I think that’s really important in a country as diverse as ours, to listen. So this guy, he says, I don’t want this, I don’t want that. But he says, I want everybody to be included. Well, that’s all I need.”

Cheap Fix: Low Flow Faucets

This weekend I installed low flow aerators on our kitchen (1.5gpm) and bathroom (1.0gpm) faucets - I didn't realize how easy it would be. Most aerators are stamped with their flow rate on the side but if they're really old (like mine) they might not, so you'll have to use your best judgment as to what you currently have. In fact, I noticed our bathroom faucet was missing the aerator all together.

Based on what I've read it seems that aerators below about 2.2gpm (gallons per minute) are considered low flow. I did listen to some advice I read that it helps to have a slightly higher capacity one in your kitchen to handle your higher water demands. I paid less than $6 each for them at OSH and they'll more than pay for themselves over their life through water and gas/electricity savings. Not to mention the fact that they definitely provide an adequate stream of water.

The U.S. Department of Energy has an online calculator than can calculate your cost savings. After the fact, I read that our East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) actually provides these water conservation devices for free to their customers, oh well...

NRDC Green Building Video Tour

Slate has a quick tour of the Natural Resources Defense Council's (NRDC) Santa Monica office, which received the U.S. Green Building Council's highest green design certification - a Platinum rating. The dual flush toilets and reuse of rainwater seem rather easily adaptable for homes. With all the rain we've had here in El Cerrito lately, I've been experimenting with the collection of rainwater in 5-gallon buckets for watering thirsty plants.

East Bay Green News Worth Checking Out

I wasn't familiar with the Berkeley nonprofit Seacology, but this is their intriguing story from the East Bay Express.

"...Started in 1991, Seacology is perhaps the most successful environmental organization you've never heard of. As of last week, the East Bay nonprofit had saved nearly two million acres of threatened island habitat, including more than 1.8 million acres of coral reef and other marine habitat around the world. In exchange, Seacology has built or funded 85 schools, community centers, water delivery systems, and other facilities...It's a pragmatic, Obama-esque approach to environmental activism. And Silverstein, the executive director of the Berkeley-based nonprofit, Seacology, says it invariably results in a "win-win" outcome..."

The future of Albany's Golden Gate Fields race track, and the land it sits on, is in doubt, as the Berkeley Daily Planet reported this week.

"...Two rumored buyers for all or parts of the property are a consortium organized by Hollywood Park president Jack Liebeau, who had previously headed Magna’s Santa Anita track, and another set of deep pockets closer to home: UC Berkeley...The fate of the Albany track has been a political minefield in Albany, with the proposed shopping center project leading to the election of two city councilmembers who opposed the project—which was to be built by Los Angeles “lifestyle” mall developer and GOP political powerhouse Frank Caruso...Should UC Berkeley buy all or part of the property, development would be exempt from the Albany council’s jurisdiction since UC is a separate governmental agency autonomous of local zoning and regulations..."

A day after this story, the Berkeley Daily Planet posted that the track owner declared bankruptcy and the property is now officially on the market.

Looking for sustainably-sourced lumber in the East Bay? Try West Oakland's EarthSource, which was recently profiled in the East Bay Express.

"...In addition to selling lumber cut in sustainable ways, EarthSource carries wood reclaimed from old buildings and salvaged from fallen trees...EarthSource sells eco-certified wood for about the same price as traditional wood. But Jeff Hunt said the biggest barrier to increasing eco-friendly wood sales over the years has been convincing customers of the quality of lesser-known, sustainably harvested wood..."

Berkeley's Solar Financing Program

The City of Berkeley rolled out its vaunted solar financing program last week, as the first participants received money for new solar panels. The groundbreaking program, known as FIRST, charges the homeowner a 20-year property tax assessment to fund the installation, with the cost also partially offset by PG&E rebates and tax credits from the recently passed federal stimulus package.

The San Francisco Chronicle gives the following investment example:

"On a typical $22,000 solar system, homeowners would pay about $180 a month on their property taxes. But the amount is reduced when factoring in PG&E rebates, which range from $2,000 to $15,000, plus a federal tax credit that allows homeowners to deduct 30 percent of the cost of the solar system from the overall amount of tax they owe."

Investing in our Parks

Thanks to The Daily Green for this historical insight of which I wasn't aware:

"In 1934, when water companies declared acres of unspoiled forested hillsides surrounding San Francisco Bay "surplus" — and thus available for development — citizens banded together to urge creation of the East Bay Regional Park District. Despite the Depression, public funds were secured to purchase and permanently protect this land. Today it has become America's largest urban park district, encompassing 98,000 acres of open space and natural areas."

It goes on to argue that the precedent set in the Great Depression, when the newly formed Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed fire roads, planted trees, and built trails and buildings in our parks, is a model for the win-win combination of conservation and economic revitalization.

El Cerrito's New Recycling Program

El Cerrito is rolling out its new, and vastly improved, curbside recycling program. Instead of the green bins we used to use, we'll now have one, large gray cart that we can toss all recyclables in. So there's no more separating needed and many more types of items can now be recycled. They'll be picked up the same morning as the trash but they noted something interesting - not to put the carts out if they're not full as it saves them time and fuel if there are fewer stops.

The city is giving a demonstration of the new system at the El Cerrito Recycling Center on Saturday, February 28, from 10am to 1pm.

Energy Conservation Gadgets

NPR's All Tech Considered had a piece earlier this week (listen) about reducing energy consumption and they pointed out some cool gadgets and websites. I liked this inexpensive device called a Kill-A-Watt that you plug your appliances into to measure their electricity usage. And, they talked about reducing phantom, or vampire, power - like using smart power strips that know when to shut down. Their research for the story is available online.

El Cerrito Del Norte BART Redevelopment

The area around Del Norte BART is hurting for some love, particularly since Target left the neighborhood last year (with no return planned). North of the Target site is the casual used car lot at 11600 San Pablo Avenue, also known as the Mayfair Block (former home of Mayfair Market). Apparently, this site has formerly been the subject of ambitious redevelopment plans including a retail/condo project (see the February 2008 El Cerrito Chamber of Commerce newsletter).

Well, the West County Times reported last weekend that the city's Redevelopment Agency is buying the land for $3.3 million in hopes of attracting a prospective developer. A bold move in these economic times...

Turnabout Thrift Shop on San Pablo Avenue

We were down by the Cerrito Speakeasy yesterday and stumbled upon Turnabout Thrift Shop. Its modest storefront belies its well-organized - albeit random - assortment of clothes, books, housewares and bric-a-brac. It does have a little of that - I'm looking through my neighbor's stuff in his wood paneled basement while he's upstairs getting me a drink sort of feeling - but we really like it and ended up finding some fabric and wine glasses for a buck a piece. The store relies on donations from the community and all proceeds go to local health programs. It's open 11am-3pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We'll be back...

Tour Green Businesses in Berkeley

East Bay Green Tours, recently profiled in the Contra Costa Times, is an innovative non-profit that organizes daylong outings to visit sustainable businesses in Berkeley. They've been doing it for a couple months now and it sounds like they've struck a nice balance between being fun and informative. Amongst the some 100 companies they have on their roster are local green favorites such as Go Green Motors, Grateful Body and the restaurant, Amanda's.

The founder now has expansion on her mind and is eyeing Richmond, Oakland and Emeryville for similar tours. For now, though, the Berkeley tours depart the last Wednesday of the month, with the next on February 25 (call 510-704-0379 for reservations).

When I first heard about GoodGuide.com I thought, what a brilliant idea. It's a user-friendly, consumer website with product ratings for toys, personal care products and household chemicals. What's special is that the ratings are based on health, environmental and social factors that, surprisingly, companies often don't like to hype (like carcinogens in shampoo and cute lead-laced bath toys). Some of the ratings are surprising, like Whole Foods' products aren't all they're cracked up to be because of their environmental record, and that cheap Suave shampoo may not be a bad option after all.

Lately I've been looking for a quick course that might give me some ideas about home improvement projects that incorporate energy efficiency or green materials. I found a six-week San Francisco Institute of Architecture course called, "Everything Eco Green Building Workshop" offered in Berkeley starting February 2, buts it's a little long and I'm not sure how helpful it would be for the layman in me. Build It Green is a local non-profit that promotes sustainable building practices in California and I check out their calendar of green building events from time to time. My favorite program, though, is the Building Education Center's "Residential Green Building and Remodeling" seminar in Berkeley on February 22. The course description sounds like it offers practical advice that I could actually put to use.

Last year I moved to El Cerrito to buy my first home - escaping the (then) high home prices of San Francisco. I'm making an attempt at living a greener life, which I'm finding is not always easy.
